The Whittier neighborhood was originally named after the Whittier the local elementary school(Whittier Elementary), which named after the abolitionist poet, John Greenleaf Whittier. Due to Whittier’s values stressed equality and inclusion, the neighborhood became ethnically integrated from the beginning. The original elementary school was torn down and replaced with a new school in 1970. The boundaries of the Whittier Neighborhood is 23rd Avenue to the South, Martin Luther King Blvd to the north, Downing to the West and York Street to the East.
The style of homes are mostly craftsman bungalows and Denver Squares, along with some ranch styled homes. Some of Whittier’s appeal, along with close proximity to downtown Denver and City Park, are the mature trees and well kept lawns in front of homes. You also have the Ford Warren Denver Public Library and other eateries located on 28th Avenue.
Though you are not next to City Park, there are numerous local parks located within Whittier, such as George Morrison Sr. Park, Fuller Park and Hale Park, to name just a few.
